Here’s an article on an interesting survey conducted by Careerbuilder.com regarding the use of social networking in recruiting. Hiring managers aren’t the only ones looking for insight into candidates before making a hiring decision. Recruiters do this as well. Though you can’t be sure what sort of filter a recruiter is using when looking at your online persona, there are things to consider when putting information about yourself “out there.”
Think about:
- Would I be happy with the presentation of my online self – if my new potential employer were to review it?
- Am I representing myself in a positive light? How might others judge me based on my pictures, comments, blogs, etc.
Social networks are blurring the line between the professional and personal. The information you post to the internet is there for all to see. Make sure you manage your online persona in a manner that fits your professional goals. You may be closing the door on a potential interview at your dream job before you ever get a chance to talk to anyone at the company.
